Interview with Ryan Nyquist

Thanks to the guys from Transworld BMX for this awesome interview with Ryan!

Ryan Nyquist is a pro amongst pros. Not only has he been competing professionally since 1996, but he’s won countless contests, pushed the envelope of backflip, 360, and 720 variations, blew minds with his section in the video End Search, and he’s been doing it all with a smile on his face and a kick-ass attitude. Ryan has been off his bike for six months (the longest he’s ever gone without riding) due to a broken hand that has gone from bad to worse, read on for the full story…

Ryan, it looks like you have a friggin’ bullet hole in your hand. Please tell me the story…

It’s a long one, but I’ll try to make it quick. I crashed on a 450 in the Dew Tour park finals in Portland last August. I broke two bones in my hand and a week later had surgery to install plates to fix it. It sounded simple enough and I might have even been back on my bike to ride the finals in Vegas in October. The surgery went well and I scheduled my first physical therapy appointment for about a week and a half later. In the meantime my hand was immobilized from most movement by having it in a splint. I started physical therapy and it was very slow moving. I saw minimal progress over the next few months and I was really starting to question if my hand was going to get back to normal on it’s own. As it turns out, my body develops scar tissue at a very rapid rate, so that first period of almost two weeks after surgery where my hand was completely immobilized was a terrible thing for my healing. My scar tissue grew and attached itself to the tendon for my index finger and basically grabbed it and wouldn’t let it move back and forth freely.

After three months of physical therapy and very little progress, I asked the doctor to have another look at it and see what he thought. I pleaded my case, and we both decided that having another surgery to remove the scar tissue from the tendon was the best option. So surgery number two happened in mid November and my hand was really feeling great afterwards. I had great range of motion and had been bending my finger and joints since I got out of surgery to ensure that the scar tissue would not stick to the tendon again. Two weeks after the operation the doctor gave me the okay to ride and my physical therapist gave me one more week of appointments until I was home free and during this time I had been making tight fists and keeping my hand moving. But that ended up being a very bad thing because there was a bunch of swelling on and around my knuckle and the skin is very thin there, so it began to split open from the inside out. I started to notice a small purple line forming where the incision scar was and it kept getting bigger and bigger. The doctor dismissed it as a little bit of blood that got stuck in the scar tissue and was just pushing it’s way to the surface. One day at physical therapy I noticed that I could see something moving through that purple line when I bent my finger back and forth. I asked the physical therapist to have a look at it, and after much brainstorming and talking about the possibilities, we both concluded that my hand had almost split back open and there was a very thin layer of translucent skin holding it together. We tried using Steri-Strips to push the two sides together in hopes it would heal on its own, but had no luck. The doctor wanted me to stuff gauze soaked in saline solution inside the actual hole to promote tissue growth, but that didn’t work either. The worst thing about it was that I was in this very bad catch 22, where I could do nothing right—with my hand being mobile and doing the exercises that were necessary to keep my range of motion good, it meant that the wound would never heal because the skin would constantly be stretching and moving, not allowing any new tissue to form. On the other side of that was that if I immobilized my hand so the wound would heal then I was jeopardizing the range of motion of my joints and tendon. So what I ended up with, after a month of trying, was a 3/8” hole over my index knuckle where you could literally see my tendon move back and forth, and a severely stiff joint that was getting worse and worse. I went to the doctor again and we both decided that a third surgery was needed. So last Friday I had another surgery to remove scar tissue, liberate the joint, and close the incision up. It will have been almost six months exactly since I broke my hand

What about your ACL? Last we spoke you had re-torn it and you needed another surgery. It seems like the last few years have been a myriad of surgeries for you.

Yeah, that’s still torn. I’m not looking to get that fixed anytime soon. My knee isn’t really an issue at all. I wear a custom CTi brace that keeps it tight. I can run and be active without it being a problem. I’m lucky.

How has this affected your time on the bike? Been tinkering in the garage more?
What’s a bike [laughs]? I was able to do some demos in Israel with Haro which was nice, but other than that I haven’t ridden my bike consistently since I broke my hand last August. It’s been killing me, too. I never realized how much bike riding is a huge part of my life until I can’t do it for a long period of time. This has been the longest amount of time I’ve spent off my bike ever. I’ve basically just been spending a lot of time with my wife and kids and trying to keep myself happy.

Steezed out 270 to the max—Nyquist style.

Have been able to film anything for Still Searchin’?
Not really. I actually backed out of the project a while back because I couldn’t find people to film with and it was hard getting away to do road trips and the things needed to film a video part. I’m not sure what the status of Still Searchin’ is right now, but I wouldn’t mind getting some clips in the video.

You’ve been back in NorCal for a few years now, how did the transition go for you overall?
It was a little tough. The move out here was very abrupt, and getting used to a whole different scene again was a challenge. Finding different parks to ride and making new friends was fun, but it was also a lot more work finding people to ride with during the day. Most people out here have full time jobs and can’t exactly meet you at the park for a session. In Greenville it was so easy to just send a text or two out, and there would always be someone to ride with.

I’m sure the scene has changed a lot from when you were younger, right?
Yeah, definitely. When I lived here we had the Ramp Club and a couple great sets of trails to ride. Now there are a lot of smaller cement parks that are fun to jib around in and some fun trails to ride, but I think I spoiled myself by having The Unit at my disposal. That place is just the best.

Has the separation anxiety from The Unit worn off? Do you have some go-to spots you’re happy with now?
I don’t think it’ll ever wear off. Every time I see a video or something with some shots of the Unit I get so jealous. I would love to have something like that out on the west coast. Not only for my own selfish reasons, but I feel a park like The Unit would help so many riders out here really progress their riding to what ever level they want to take it to.

360 one-footed table.

Besides The Unit, how has your departure from the Pro Town scene affected your riding, like from a motivational standpoint?
It’s a bit harder to get motivated for sure. I’ve spent many days alone at the Santa Cruz park just going through the motions of a session trying to keep on my bike, but that gets old fast. There are not a lot of people who live in my area who want to go to the park and send a 720 over the box or session flip variations. The people who I do ride with are awesome, though, and if anything, it’s really made me appreciate what I have here in Northern California, and what I had in Greenville.

You’re 32 years old, been a top pro rider for pretty much half your life at this point, and hands down have one of the best attitudes in BMX. What’s your secret to longevity?
I think having a good attitude and having fun go a long way in our sport. Nobody likes someone with a bad attitude and who is negative all the time. I love having fun and smiling on my bike. As far as the competing goes, I enjoy the challenge of putting a run together and testing myself to see what I can accomplish.

What happens after your hand ordeal is finally behind you?

I’m going to get on my bike and ride. Slow at first, but I’m motivated to get back to where I was. I want to film some more web edits, too. I have some good ideas brewing in my head, so that’ll be fun to bring those to life. I’m also going to be training for a triathlon in April with my wife. Lots of pool time swimming laps and running around the neighborhood.

Would you like to give some thanks?
Thanks to my sponsors for sticking by me and being understanding during my injury. Thanks to my family and especially my wife for putting up with my grumpy self for the past six months. Thanks for this interview as well!

Dennis Enarson Wins Dew Dirt in Portland

Dennis qualified first for today's final for Dirt in Portland, Oregon and kept the flow going to take the win, but it didn't come easy. Australian Kyle Baldock overtook Dennis's score and Dennis had to pull through on his last run.

Dennis killed it with tech, variety and big tricks. Truck drop in, flip whip, double grab to superman, 360 the long and low, and opposite truck driving the last jump. All this plus add in a break-less Haro "SD" bike and a head wind that some other riders complained about.

Dennis is such a good kid, we are super proud of him at Haro.

Congratulations Dennis!

Nasty's trip to Australia

It was so good to have Cory "Nasty" Nastazio on our Haro Australia road trip. He brings a lot of energy and positivity to the crew and although we didn't ride much stuff he was into, he still rode and did his thing with no complaints.

When the trip starts with a canceled contest due to a shady business man it seemed to be off to a bad start, then a few days later Nasty spent all day at the Hospital with an infection called staph which made him so sick for a few days, then he finally feels better and crashed so hard riding a capsule bowl splitting his chin open and knocking himself out, finally his trip comes to an end with a rained out Dirt comp!

Even though it doesn't sound like a dream trip, Nasty made us laugh every day and really entertained the kids at the shop visits. Nasty rules.

Don Ash Haro Team do it again!

Last weekend the Haro BMX Team grabbed 12 plates in the Victorian state titles with Brandon May picking up Vic 1st in A Pro!!

Brandon was coming off a fantastic ride on Saturday and Sunday was no different. He easily won all 3 races and qualified 1st for the final. In the final he missed the gate and was sitting third down the first straight. A good move in both the 1st and 2nd corners had him leading by the 3rd straight and he never looked back to take the win! Brenton Gibbs also rode in A Pro but had a bad start in the semi finals and missed the final.

Saturday was the Champbikx/Probikx series and Sunday the 20" classes with a great result from all the riders:

  • Nathan Barker hasn’t raced since the Australian titles earlier in the year and managed to pick up 4th on Saturday and 5th on Sunday in the 25-29 mens.
  • Nathan May also hasn’t raced since the Australian titles and picked up 2nd and 3rd place in 19-24 men
  • Brandon May rode in 17-18 cruiser. Brandon lead from start to finish in all his races & came home with 1st place. He got 3rd place on Saturday
  • Brenton Gibbs rode in 16 boys. This was Brenton's first ride since breaking his wrist 5 weeks ago and he got 3rd on Saturday. On Sunday he crashed in the final and got 8th place.
  • Tyson May rode in 14 boys in the final Tyson finished up with a 2nd place. This was Tyson's first Victorian ranking.
  • Emily Richardson rode in 13 girls. Emily made the final & ended up in 6th place on Sunday and 9th on Saturday.
  • Jay Beazley rode in 12 boys. Jay won most of his races and rode his Haro cruiser to a 3rd place & his first Victorian ranking. He backed up his cruiser results with a 4th on Sunday in 20".
  • Luke Richardon rode in 11 boys. Luke has been getting better every race & ended up with his best result, 19th out of 40.
  • Mikayla Hammond rode in the 7 girls class. This is a non competitive class, however she was out front all day. Next year she steps up to 8 girls where she can gain a ranking at events.

The 2011 race season kicks off in January with the Track Attack series & most of the team will attend. All our riders have qualified for the 2011 Australian Titles in Cairns.

Dennis is still in Australia

If your lucky you could still possibly meet up with Dennis Enarson in Sydney.
He's extended his trip and is staying a bit longer to enjoy the Australian summer.
Dennis has been really enjoying his trip so far! We may have him visiting more often it seems...

Friday 26 November 2010

Haro Australia trip comes to an end.

Well its been one of the funnest trip Ive been on in a while, everyone got along well, we rode a bunch of good stuff, the weather was spot on, plus we got to go to my homeland.

The trip was two weeks long and included eight Bike Hub (Haro dealer) visits around south east Australia. Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and up to Brisbane.

We filmed for a road trip DVD and it should be a good one to watch when it comes out, and we hope to sell it for a really cheap price. It should be available in January 2011.

Thanks to everyone that came to the shops to support us, the Bike Hub's, Back Bone BMX, The Gold Coast Compound park, Ramp Fest park, Scottish John, Glen from Canberra, Chris Pollack, Virgin Australia for not charging us full price for our bags, Haro Australia for the support and organization. It was an amazing trip, and one the boys are very thankful to be apart of.

Teo shred's it up

Our filmer on this trip Teo received rider of the day.
We rode at Rampfest indoor park in Melbourne with all the locals and it was a great time.

Teo rode a bunch, it was great to see. He hasn't ridden forever! Ice grinds, 360's, and he even wrapped up a little challenge we had going on in the bowl area.
One kid thought he was part of the Haro team.

Dont ever forget how much fun BMX is.

Today we head to Queensland by plane. We have 2 last shop visits. Hope to meet you all soon.

Sunday 21 November 2010

Dennis' lil brother

We are half way through our Australia road trip. We've made it down to Victoria now and are trying to catch up on some filming while we are here, Our goal is to get enough footage for a road trip DVD, we are just clocking footage and we will see what happens.

Today (Sunday) Ramp Fest indoor park in Melbourne has a little gathering at 5pm, we will be there, so come hang out.

Tuesday 16 November 2010

A wet day in Sydney

Nasty with a famous meat Pie, The boys live off these things.

Yesterday we woke to rain and we tried to wait it off but it wasn't stopping.
By 3pm, we decided to go to Monster Park at the Sydney Olympic Stadium.
Monster has a indoor section and it was surprisingly not too busy for a wet day in Sydney.

Scooter's are unfortunately really popular in Oz, bike rider numbers are down.
Dennis was trying something decent and kept getting snaked by the scooter kids and he wasn't happy. He said earlier that he was moving to Oz, then he changed his mind. Haha.
We rode for a bit, Nasty dog got some euro's upside down on a transfer and Ronnie was back riding after he sprained his ankle the other day.

Today we have a shop visit in Dapto at the bike Hub, hope to see you there. Mention this post and win something, come and talk to me...

Our Weekend in Sydney

We continue our Australian road trip, On Saturday we had a couple of Sydney bike shops to visit.

The first one was Fulcher's Bike Hub in Chipping Norton, The Staff were really nice and they had a selection of the 2011 Haro's which are making their way to the show room floor these days.

The second shop was Fraser's Cycles in Taren Point. This shop was probably the biggest bike shop I've ever seen, and it shared the building with a toy store, so it's a one stop shop for the kids.
The turn out was pretty good at both stores and it was great to meet the local kids.

On Sunday we lazed around the beautiful Bondi beach a bit, and we finally got moving at 3pm headed west to ride some trails. The trek just from the car park to the jumps was pretty nuts, a 15 minute ride over streams, up hills, and through the jungle, these jumps were so well hidden in that no body's going to know about there location.
The guys had a lot of rain lately so the jumps were a bit wet, but we got a really good ride in and Dennis probably did the most laps for sure. The amount of work the locals had done over the years here is unreal.

We really appreciate the locals getting the jumps dialed in for us to ride.

Today it's looking a bit wet, but we are hoping to go back to some Street stuff we drove past that Nasty spotted!

Our First Day in Australia!

After we all got some rest on a 14hr flight from LA to Sydney, Australia arriving at 6am, the guys were wide awake and excited. We are staying at Bondi Beach, its one of the most famous beaches in Australia. The boys bought some cheap body boards and jumped in for a swim in the ocean, Ronnie and Nasty paddled way out, but Dennis was scared of sharks!
We went and got our bikes together and rode the cement park that's located right on the beach. Even though we were all a bit jet lagged, and we were just cutting laps, Dennis dropped some hammers and freaked us all out. Day one, I can only imagine how this trip is going to pan out!

Australian Tour Dates

Alright, this is what you’ve been waiting for… your chance to meet Mackay, Nasty, Dennis and Ronnie! They’re heading down for a huge tour of Australia and they’ve got an action packed couple of weeks. Come along to meet the guys and grab an autograph. For full tour details click here

Rider Bios: As written by Mackay

Dennis Enarson: Coming from San Diego California, 19yr old Dennnis Enarson is said to be one of the best riders in BMX right now. Dirt, Street, or Park, it doesn’t matter, Dennis can own any session, all with a smile from ear to ear.
I’ve seen Dennis have a huge night on the town, and wrap up a contest the next day, winning a Subaru car! Dennis is a really nice guy with a great family supporting him on his adventures, and he does it all on his signature SD Haro frame.
Other sponsors include Nike 6.0, Demolition parts, Rockstar Energy Drink and Matador.

Ronnie Napolitan: Ronnie Napolitan, 19yrs old from Youngstown Ohio,Ronnie first grabbed my attention on the Levi’s video that came out a couple of years ago, then he was on a trip in Greenville, North Carolina and I witnessed him filming for Levi’s once again and he was really dialed on the bike, plus it looked like he was having a bit of fun at the same time. We need guys like Ronnie around, he makes trips fun and reminds us, life isn’t too serious. Ronnie’s really underrated; the kid can do all the Dew tour bangers as well as some of the most tech move in BMX. Google Ronnie Napolitan and check some video’s of him, you wont be disappointed.
Ronnie is also sponsored by Osiris Shoes.

Cory “Nasty” Nastazio: Cory Nastazio is 32yrs old from Los Angeles, California and has been a top paid pro since 1998. Cory joined the Haro team at the start of 2009 and we are pumped to have him on our side. Cory has a full trophy cabinet, Number One rider awards, X Games medals, and the plenty of cuts and bruises to prove his long career in BMX.
Cory is riding probably the best in his career right now, with having Woodward camp just down the road, he can focus on BMX and dial in all his crazy flips and spins he’s know for.
Cory is full of life and is the centre of attention anywhere we go, he’s the real deal.
Cory is also sponsored by Vans Shoes, and Rockstar Energy Drink.

Colin Mackay, I can’t talk about myself, so here is my bio courtesy of Vans Shoes please.

Over the last ten years, Australian bmxers have put themselves in the results of the biggest comps on the planet. The rider that all those Aussies followed was Colin Mackay. Before the millennium, "The Admiral," had paved the way by achieving the previously unthinkable in winning a US contest series Year End title. Over the last 11 seasons, Colin has been a constant on the US contest scene and has got to witness and spearhead the Aussie invasion. Competing against whilst also being a compatriot of fellow Australian pros such as Ryan Guettler, Cam White and Luke Parslow. Mix that in with being a character in a video game and having a signature finger bike and it's easy to see that the likeable Aussie is living the life of a US Pro.

Entering his 30's and whilst still being the rider that he is Colin has also managed to become a very skilled photographer. Chances are you've probably seen a Colin Mackay photograph and not realized it. He is also BMX team manager for Premium and Haro. His Journey and his success are a testament to hard work and a love of riding and when it comes to the Aussie Invasion, you're definitely looking at the official floodgate opener.

Other sponsors include Vans Shoes, Rockstar Energy Drink, and Kenda tires.

A few weeks ago we headed out for a VitalBMX's "Game Of Bike".
Some big cash was up for grabs and some heated battles went down, some riders went for the throat, and others played for fun.

Here is the video's courtesy VitalBMX for the Haro boys if you want to see what went down...

Drew won the $7g's and donated it to the Athlete Recovery Fund!
Dennis came in 4th and also donated his cash...

Nyquist Dominates Park once again...

Ryan Nyquist is 31 years old and has been competing for 13+ years, and every once in a while he will do a run on park that no one can beat. It's amazing to feel the energy and when the buzzer goes, you just might hear Nyquist scream. It's the 60 seconds of pure determination that has him erupt.

Half way through Ryan's winning run, I happen to look over to Dennis Enarson and he said "He's going to win". It's just something about Ryan when he gets on a roll, he usually pull's the whole run off.

Ronnie Napolitan and Marcus Tooker competed in Park Prelims and they both had some nice moves, Ronnie booted a whip into the wall ride, and Marcus rode part run with his bars backwards and even pulled a flair like that!

Dennis had it going on until he cased on his second run and took a spill, if he got through his whole run, he may have been on the podium I'm pretty sure. He had the best intro. Pocket airing a giant corner, cranking into a 24+ foot gap whip into the wall. No one messed with either of these moves.

Dennis finished the Dew 2010 season in 5th place, He killed SLC stop winning Park and dirt in one weekend! Congrats D!

The Dirt contest prelims were on Thursday night, and unfortunately long time competitor and friend of ours, TJ Lavin had a bad fall and is currently still in hospital with a head injury, he is doing a lot better, but it's a slow road from now. Get well soon bro.

Cory Nastazio didnt make the cut for the Dirt finals but was there filming for his new TV show, more on that soon...

Nyquist and Enarson had to ride Dirt finals just a couple hours after shredding park!

Nyquist had the top scoring run of the night, but unluckily couldn't get a second run on the board.

Dennis was unlucky on his first 2 runs, one of them he clipped a tough block that surrounds the course and went into a scorpion position, and lucky for him, he landed on another block that softened the fall a little. Dennis' third run, after having a bad night, he put his back back on and dropped in flipped the first jump! Just goes to show Dennis is having a good time, and when things aren't going good, you can lighten the situation. Dennis Rules!

Congrats to all the Haro team for a great 2010 Dew Tour season, no Dew Cup champs this year, but we had a few great victories.

Lets do it all again in 2011!

Best web video in a while

Although this guy (Erik Elstran) has nothing to do with Haro, this video is way too cool not to publish on the site. I'm sure Leigh Ramsdell loves this guy.
Have fun kids, and think outside the box.

No flip fakie's or flair whips here...(Maybe a flair quad whip!)

Enarson and Long top the podium

Nic Long, our newest addition to the Haro/Rockstar race team, and Dennis Enarson have been good friends since they were young. Dennis used to race on Nic's fathers team, back in his early years as a racer. Now as team mates once again, they both topped the podium today and made us proud as usual. This afternoon at the Dew Tour in Salt Lake City, Dennis brought home the win in the BMX Dirt Final with a 92.54. With his win, he got a ton of cash and what looks to be some custom painted wake board??

Meanwhile in San Diego, Nic was competing in the UCI Bmx Supercross World Cup. With over 150 riders entered in yesterdays time trial, only the top 64 were to qualify on to tonight's main event. Nic qualified easily into the top 64 yesterday after only needing to use 1 of his 2 attempts. Tonight, he started his night off with a 5th in the first moto, 2nd in his next moto and I believe another 2nd in his 3rd moto. From there, he breezed on through the quarter and semi finals into the main event. In the main, Nic didn't get the start he was looking for and nearly swapped the second jump. That didn't stop him though as he kept it wide open and moved up through traffic and to the front of the pack. In the last turn, the door opened for a high-low pass and Nic was gone, bringing home the overall win and a custom painted guitar from Troy Lee Designs, but not before stopping for a quick puke and rally session! Congrats boys, on your new wake boards and guitars aha.

In other news, one of our racers [Jason Rogers] got his bike stolen out of the back of the Haro truck in San Diego on Wednesday. Today at the Dew Tour, Ryan Nyquist got his bike stolen, too! So not only are Haro Bikes topping podiums from Salt Lake to SD, they are highly desirable among thieves. Haha. Haro bikes can't be stopped!

Enarson Wins Dirt at Dew!

Hot, Dry and Windy conditions were what the riders had to deal with in Salt Lake City, USA today for the dirt finals.
Ryan Nyquist battled with a neck sprain all weekend and although he made it into the final today, he wasn't shredding his usual style. I'm sure Ryan will chill for a week and the injury should improve.

Dennis took down the "Mad Dog" who had won the 2 previous Dew stops in Dirt with great trail flow and big moves all the way down the pack. Flip-whips, double whips, superman seat grab bar, opposite trucks, and an opposite double whip were just some of the moves that Dennis did to win, all done with confidence and a look of experience.

Dennis is up for NORA cup next week for Number One Dirt rider and also Number One Ramp rider, I have my money on him winning a couple more things this coming week...

Lords of Dirt, France

This past weekend, Cory Nastazio and Mackay traveled all the way to France for the "Lords of Dirt" contest. Here are some notes below on the trip. Thanks to Patrick Guimez for hooking up with everything and for hosting a great event. See you next year!

1. Flying into Spain, and driving to France. I love Europe!
2. Staying in a house with 10 guys and one girl.
3. Checking out the contest jumps and seeing they were in 100% condition. Thank you for the hard work!
4. Going to the nearby beach. (Beautiful!)
5. It happened to be the hottest weekend of the year, so between runs we were resting in the Van with engine running and AC on all day.
6. The curved Wall-ride was really fun, at first I didn't like it, but it was good to me.
7. Going to Mcdonalds everyday.
8. Nasty got an interview in a French magazine that has full nude women and extreme sports in it. What a combo.
9. Nasty got hurt in practice after a big fall. He went back up the roll in and did a run that would have got him top 3. It was nuts! But then his hand swelled up and he had to sit out of the contest.
10. Getting to hang out and ride with a bunch of cool people with a good atmosphere in a beautiful part of the world.

Nike 6.0 HB BMX Pro Finals Video - More BMX Videos

Tuesday 10 August 2010

Nyquist victorious in HB, Enarson 3rd.

Just wrapped up an amazing 4 day contest in Huntington Beach for the Nike 6 HB Bmx Pro. We had 4 guys competing with Ryan Nyquist, Dennis Enarson, Marcus Tooker and Allan Cooke. Here’s the breakdown of the contest format over the 4 days

- The first day (Thursday) there are 10 riders and each get two 45-second runs. The top five scores get pushed to the semifinals on Saturday.
- The second day (Friday) will be the same as the first day—10 riders (different riders than the first day) each get two 45-second runs. The top five scores get pushed to the semifinals on Saturday.
- The third day (Saturday) they will take the top five guys from each of the first days and the top five guys from last year’s Nike 6.0 HB BMX Pro, and again each of the 15 riders will get two 45-second runs.
- On the final day (Sunday) the top ten riders from the semifinals will all compete for the big prize money—$85,000.

Thursday saw Nyquist put together two average runs, the best one being an 86, and finishing 6th for the day. It looked as though Ryan would not be moving on in the competition. Ryan headed to Disneyland with his wife and son thinking he had just had his third unlucky weekend in a row.

Friday saw Dennis, Marcus and Allan looking to fight their way into the top 5 to transfer on to Saturday’s semi final. Dennis killed it with ease and was the #1 qualifier with a 91.25 while Marcus wasn’t so lucky, finishing up 82 back in 7th place. If that wasn’t bad enough, Marcus got salt rubbed in his wounds when his boss being the last rider on deck, qualified 5th for the day with an 83.25. Pretty impressive Allan, and Marcus you are now fired. . . . kidding.

Friday evening Ryan got the call that one of the riders was injured and had to back out of the semi finals on Saturday so he was given a second chance at first place. Ryan, did you eat your lucky charms?

Saturday all 3 guys met up in the semi final where Allan would be going home early after finishing 12th. Good runs though AC Fabz you still got it! Dennis ended up 6th and Ryan ended up 7th for the day and were both heading into the final on Sunday.

Sunday was a different story for Ryan. I’ve been to the last three events with him and I have to be honest when I say I’ve wondered where the Ryan that everyone knows is. Obviously Ryan is one of the best guys ever so I have high standards for him, but he seems like he has just been cruising through runs and hasn’t really looked like he was in his zone. Last weekend didn’t count as he injured his foot in practice, but none the less it had been a minute since I was blown away by one of his runs. When he came out for run #1 today, it was definitely the RyNy that everyone knows throwing down flawless tricks and linking his runs together like no other. After everyone was done with their first run, Ryan sat in 3rd place. Dennis had a decent first run but needed some cleaning up and sat in 7th going into run #2. When I say run #2 for Ryan was ridiculous, I mean my jaw was literally on the deck of the ramp afterward. I think it may have been if not THE best, one of the best runs he’s ever put together before. The crowd went crazy and I think all of his fellow riders were equally pumped and when his score came he went straight to the top of the leader board with a 93.25. Dennis followed Ryan and he killed it as well, and I thought if anyone would have passed him it would have been Dennis. A 91.00 wasn’t enough for Dennis to take over the lead but he moved into the 3rd place position with only 4 riders left to go. In the end, Ryan took the overall win and the $25,000 and reminding everyone that you can never count him out when the money is on the line. Dennis cashed in a $10,000 for his efforts. What happens when you’re Ryan Nyquist and you win a contest at the beach while being team mates with Dennis Enarson? Clearly you get a couple hand fulls of sand right in the top of your helmet. What a victory celebration for Ryan! Good job boys.

Amazing contest put on by Nike 6. Next stop this coming weekend in Portland for Dew Tour stop #2.

New Haro Range Out!

For 2011 we have given the entire BMX line a huge face lift; new spec, new names, new set ups – and most importantly, a new perspective. With help from our team riders, shop owners, and most importantly you, the consumer, we’ve designed what we feel is our best line ever. What are some of the biggest changes? Glad you asked…

FRAME OPTIONS
For the first time in Haro’s history, we’re offering some of our most popular bikes with different top tube lengths. Why? Basically, we don’t believe that the amount of money you have to spend should dictate the size bike you ride. Only have $300 but need something longer (or shorter) than a 20” top tube? No problem; we have a few choices for you. Why are choices good? Because when you’re on a bike that fits, you’ll ride better, and that translates to more fun. And if BMX is about any one thing, it’s fun.

ONE BIKE FOR ANY SPOT
Gone are the days where you had one bike to ride dirt on, and a different one to ride street on. These days, one bike is meant to handle anything a rider feels like throwing at it. In today’s BMX world, terrain no longer dictates bike set up; personal preference does, and we’ve designed our line entirely around that philosophy. The last time we checked, this was ‘Freestyle’ and we’re pretty sure that when our founder Bob Haro invented the sport of ‘Freestyle’ with his friends in the 70’s, there were no limits. That same philosophy applies today.

SOMETHING FOR EVERY ONE
What you’ll find when you check out our 2011 line is that less is more. We’re offering fewer models, but providing sizing options for nearly every one. “Something for everyone” is what we are bringing to the table for 2011, and the best part is, everything we offer has been designed and built to be ridden on ramps, dirt, street or whatever you can find to shred.

Check out the new range here!

Dennis Dual Silver Medals at X!

Just in case you’ve been living under a rock the last couple days, our guy Dennis got two silver medals at X-Games in BMX Park and Street this weekend. Yesterday was the BMX Park final, and Dennis made the most out of his second chance. As we mentioned before, Dennis finished just shy of a qualifying spot for the final, but Rob Darden blew his knee out shortly after he qualified through prelims. With Rob being unable to ride, Dennis moved into the hot seat and was a totally different rider in the final than he was in the prelims the day before. Coming out with a silver medal in BMX Park is a huge accomplishment.

Earlier today was the BMX street final where Dennis was 2nd qualifier in prelims behind his good friend Garrett Reynolds. Just before the contest started, Dennis mentioned that he was looking forward to getting home. Then he said, “Oh man we gotta wait around til 6:30 if Garrett wins a medal.” I responded, “what do you mean, IF Garrett wins a medal? You’re getting one too.” His response was something like, “Me? I’m not winning a medal in Street, dude.” When the comp began, Dennis set it off and was in second behind Garrett from the beginning and that looked to be how it would finish. In Dennis’ second run of the jam, he blew his tire out on a big 540. Colin threw on the worlds ugliest rear wheel and Dennis went back to work in run #3 and didn’t skip a beat. As I write this, Dennis is getting his two medals like a gentleman. We’re proud of you Dennis you absolutely destroyed it this weekend. I don’t think Dennis knows how good he is, and if he does, he doesn’t seem to care. Win or lose, Dennis is always smiling. Gary Young said it best, “nobody has more fun than Dennis.” X-Games 16 was amazing. Congrats D from everyone at Haro! We’re psyched!

King Of Dirt Australia

On my last day in Australia after being there a month I was lucky enough to attend a Am/Pro contest in my hometown of Brisbane.

It was a flash back from the old days for sure, with the line up of riders and old school Brisbane riders in the crowd.

It was great to see some new faces in the Aussie scene as well and the future looks bright. Kids were riding really well in all classes. Chris Courtenay, Jake May, Dean Manson, little Alex, and David Girch to name a few.

I got through qualifying and straight after it was the final which was 2 runs, best run counts.. I layed down a first run that scored pretty good, I was stoked! The second run I messed up, but held onto my first score all the way until Guettler dropped in, and I waited his final run. He slammed real hard on his head but got up and shook it off, then they announced I had won! I was really happy for sure, the extra cash will help pay for all those pub meals and meat pies I ate in Oz.

It was great to be able to attend such an event and thanks go out to Chris Bierton who makes it happen year after year and to Unit Clothing for putting this video together.
